This credit is an either/or with the first two in Water Efficiency (you cannot get points in the first two and claim the points here). It grants 3 points to homeowners who
design the plumbing such that irrigation system water demand is supplied by municipal recycled water.
The credit goes on to say, “This is applicable only in communities with a municipal recycled water program.” Obviously.
According to Wikipedia, California and Florida are leaders in developing reclaimed water systems is the United States. It’s good that the USGBC gives points here, because if I lived in a town with municipal recycled water for irrigation, I would definitely use it. It may cost more for the city to treat it and distribute it, but apparently, cities that do have reclaimed water for irrigation sell it a lower rate than fresh water to encourage people to use it. Seems like a no-brainer to accumulate 3 points, but Minneapolis does not have a recycled water system, so we can’t do it. All in all, zero points for the WE1: Water Reuse.
